- SYNOPSIS -
If growing up in her home wasn’t enough to shatter Madelyn Stone’s illusions of happily ever after, then serving several years behind bars certainly was. Her crime? Believing in family and growing up on the wrong side of the tracks.

She’s learned the hard way that there is no such thing as a prince who’ll ride in and save the day, and she pledges never to trust anyone again. Never. Between a career in the Marines and plans to marry his childhood sweetheart, Holten Andrews had his future all mapped out…until life took an unexpected, heart-ripping turn. Now he’s moved on with a new career in law, as well as vowing to confine women to one of three categories: family, professional, and f*ckable. No blurring the lines. Ever. Love is the last thing on Maddy’s mind as she attempts to forge a new path out of the wreckage of her life.

Holt’s sense of loyalty is rocked when he’s blindsided by feelings for a woman he would normally condemn. When revelations from Maddy’s past threaten her safety, Maddy has to put her faith in Holt, while Holt fights not to lose the one woman who’s blurred all of his lines. Every choice they make will figure into whether or not they can make yesterday’s dreams still come true tomorrow.

'Both of us had alluded to cracks in our lives that if explored too far might split wide open, leaving us raw and exposed. I had a feeling we’d end up either completely breaking each other or filling in the cracks. The question was, could we do one without the other?'
YT-TEASER-3
His long legs uncrossed and he stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. While I had caused a mere ripple when I entered the room, this man drew a wave of attention as he crossed the room to stand in front of me. "Madelyn Stone?"

His self-assured tone and appraising glance didn't give me any clues as to whether he was there to help or cause trouble, so I simply nodded. I'd learned long ago it was better not to give more information than asked. "John McCloskey sent me to meet you." The grimace on his face told me how he felt about it.

I guessed to him, meeting me was about the equivalent of being asked to take out the trash.

- SYNOPSIS -
Valerie Moore was a beautiful, headstrong girl with below-average social skills and above-average anxiety (including a flair for over-analyzing).

With her mother long deceased, and her father recently deployed, she ends up being sent to live with her eccentric aunt in a tiny town nestled in the mountains of Pennsylvania. But, being a Navy brat had made her into a bit of a loner, and making friends certainly wasn’t her strongest suit. As if the life of a typical teen wasn’t hard enough.

But Valerie soon discovers she’s not a typical teenager. Not by a long shot.

SECRETS are revealed…

…About her family, about her newfound friends and relationships, and about her whole world… Things that have been kept from her for her entire life…

But the biggest secret of all is revealed when Valerie discovers that she has Elemental powers, and a chain of inexplicable and irrevocable events unleashes throughout the little town…

My Thoughts: Endless Elements of Surprises
This book is "Avatar: The Last Airbender" meets "X-Men" in a high school. The fact the lead girl finds herself in a world of super hot super powered high school is totally crazy (and lucky), but by the end you'll be so wrapped up in her drama looking for the next book. I know I'm excited to read more even if the girl can't pick a boy, literally to save her life!
When her naval officer father is sent out on deployment, Valerie Moore is sent to live with her aunt in a small Pennsylvania town. Valerie is used to being the new girl thanks to her dads career, but now being forced to return to Center Allegheny high as a senior is sure to put a bump in her plan to stay unnoticed. It's not long before Valerie is quickly noticed by all as the "new" gorgeous girl around and she eventually makes friends. Of course it helps that there are so many hot guys at the school three of which confuse her mind and heart. Valerie quickly notices that along with great looks there is more to her classmates and is determined to find out what is happening around them that could change the weather or start other strange occurrences in town.  Now Valerie's search begins to point home when her own family history comes up and questionable truth is revealed. In the end Valerie is left with more questions and than answers, especially when a powerful stranger drops in when she needed him he most.
Overall, I really enjoyed it for the action and SciFi, but the love interest was killing my interest. Most of the book is centered around Valerie discovering herself but also figuring out her love-likes. Valerie like a boy she liked since childhood, a new charming athlete who adores her and a smoking hot college boy who's a little bad. Gotta envy the girl for 3 "problems". The drama became tiring because when I finally figured out my pick for her, then another guy got added to the suitor list, I started waiting for other men to pop up every chapter. I'm truly hoping the 'who is right for me' questioning with be resolved in the next book, because it's rather sad to be tied to three guys so deeply all at once. Now despite all the man drama, I was very excited about the powers of the elements and exploring Valerie's family history. The fight scenes were nuts, especially the Lauren vs. Valerie fight, no elements were used but I was like "Oh Dang! That had to hurt!" There is a cliff hanger ending but it will make you want to read more. So if you want to read about a girl finding out she comes from a society of elemental wielding people living amongst humans who are either fighting for dominance, secrecy, or complacency then this series is going to peak your interest.

My Thoughts: Judgement Day Is Here!
Oh Snap!! This novel is the 4th installment in the "House of Royals Series" and it's not to be missed. You'll be gasping in horror then cringing in sadness followed by happiness before the final OMG moment. Seriously with that revealing ending I can't wait the next, and subsequent, last book in the series.
Left to await her trial for treason in the King Cyrus' prison, Alivia Ryan finds out what it means to be stripped of everything. Alivia had been queen of her house only days before her arrest, but now even her loyal house appears to doubt her innocence. So it is that through her imprisonment Alivia learns a lot about herself. Especially, when one of her prison mates is none other than her ex-Ian Ward, who helps her talk through many of her emotions and past actions. But it's the king himself that may just completely break Alivia as Cyrus seeks revenge for being tricked and emotionally played with. So when Alivia stands trial the questions will be who is still loyal to her and is she innocent?
Overall, kinda dark but great. Alivia is put through a lot of trials in darks ways that expose all the manipulative and unethical decisions she made while securing her house. While following this series a reader will know Alivia always wanted to be the light in this dark vampire world, but last book she let her ambitions and emotions lead her into unwise choices. Basically, Alivia gets punished and Cryus is cemented as a sadistic jerk whom everyone should hate. Now Alivia does end up choosing a guy, whom I actually still needing to be won over by, but he helps her heal after imprisonment. Plus they take a cute trip back home to Colorado together and find out major info to help Alivia fight the war back at the house. So if you haven't read this series start because it's getting intense and who knows what's gonna happen next?!

EXCERPT
“Royal lineage and rights or not,” a woman from the crowd says. “Treason is treason.”

I can barely concentrate on the conversation being had. I’m so hungry. My eyes dart around the table, drooling over those sautΓ©ed mushrooms. Dying for a taste of that buttered asparagus.

Suddenly, Ian stands and stalks over to me. To my great relief, he has a plate in his hand, filled with different foods. He sets it down in front of me.

“And who gave you permission to do so?” X demands, practically spitting fire.

I don’t wait for someone to rip the plate away; I’m digging in with my hands, ravenous.

“You expect her to defend herself when she can barely think straight from starvation?” Ian manages to defend me in a calm manor. “You let her rot with nothing for a month and then expect her to perform in front of a jury? Carefully, your royalnesses. You’re starting to look like you don’t want this to be fair, at all.”

        “You will-”

“Now, now,” Dorian interrupts X. “This man has been cleared of any crime, released from prison. His presence here makes him a guest. Perhaps we will treat him as one.”

At once, she gains her composure back, throwing her hair over her shoulder, her eyes dropping to the table in silence. She may be the King’s chancellor, but she was just put in her place.

“Before we begin,” Cyrus moves on, “I must warn you all. Lady Conrath here is quite the actress. She, for some time during my visit to the States, made me believe she truly was Sevan, our beloved queen, returned to me after so long. While in the shadows, she was spending some very intimate time with our most decorated spy. I had no idea for some time. She hid her true feelings well. So please, let us keep that in mind as she tells us her tales.”

The Hive Queen Saga’s Thrilling Conclusion!
Rhiannon and her Hive have mastered space travel. Sort of. At least, they’re better at it. They’ve outsmarted kidnappers, survived severe oxygen deprivation, and heisted back their own ship engine from would-be thieves.
Since joining up, they’ve traveled further and further away from their home planet. But out on Yin He Garden Station (in Chinese-owned territory), home catches up at a physics symposium.
When Alan’s former research advisor makes an offer that’ll bring them home as respected members of society, Rhiannon knows she has to accept. But home isn’t exactly as she left it, and a hostile space fleet stands between her aging ship and her new/old life. Should she be running towards the fleet, or scurrying back into international space as fast as her craft can go?

My Thoughts: All Hail The Queen of Queens!
This is the third, but possibly not last, book in the Hive Queen Saga. And if you have not read any of the books before you must stop and do so or you will be lost. Honestly it took me reading all three books to grasp the Hive concept and understand a few other plot points. The author is great in using intergalactic issues to explore contemporary problems that many young adults who read and love SciFi will find enjoyable.
Now a complete hive with all male devotees, Queen-Commander Rhiannon has set her crew towards a new destination. The hive's arrival at the Chinese operated Yin He Garden Station is almost everything they could hope for. The gardens remind the Dyfed born hive mates of home and their lost connection to their love of nature. Rhiannon tries to keep her Devoted together but she is distracted by their guide, which is something a queen must never be, even if the guy is cute. But there is something else amiss about the station that puts the Hive at risk and soon they find themselves headed to the one place they swore never to return, Home. Though upon returning to Dyfed the hive witnesses a rebellion and coup. Queen Rhiannon won't stand for her world being controlled or manipulated and sets about doing something no other Queen has done before. The question is in the end will her hive survive?
Overall, the story was a good conclusion to the saga, but I still have more questions. The whole hive concept is still strange to me but I feel like I'm just understanding it because Rhiannon herself is just grasping it. Rhiannon went from book smart to people smart, she grew from being about studying all the time to trying to understand and help people especially her people, which made her a true Queen and not a dreaded Preceiver (A position we still never find out more about). The subplot concerning all the missing queens, which was intermediately written into the previous two books became the focal point of the epic finale. There are still a few things I wonder about like what happened to the other devoted and queens who were used/abused in the rebellions schemes, I felt that was left open ended and the epilogue left room for more books in the saga. So if you are into SciFi, space travel, different cultures and family made up of people you may not be related to but still love absolutely care for then this series would be interesting to try.

$ALE Alert!! - "Go Set a Watchman" by Harper Lee

(To Kill a Mockingbird, Book 2)
by Harper Lee
Price dropped as of June 21, 2016
from $15.99 to $3.99 (that's a 75% Price Drop)
This is probably one of the most controversial novels of the year in respects to writers rights vs. readers demands for more books from an author. I was originally not to going to buy this book solely based on how the author was treated in regards to her rights as the writer. However, with a deal this good, I couldn't resist and had to sell out to satisfy my curiosity in wondering if it's as good as or better than the classic "To Kill A Mockingbird"?

My Thoughts: Heartbreaking But Honest.
This novel is truly raw, brutal, but real in helping readers understand abuse and the healing process. The author writes from the heart and gives realism to her character's situation. Reading this novel has enlightened me in so many ways.
Night after night, day after day fourteen year old Ashley Asher is frightened by her secret. Her home is not a safe place. No matter how many times Ashley tries to tell her mom that she is being abused and molested by her stepfather, Ashley is told she is imagining things. It's not until things go too far and Ashley mask of "normalcy" breaks in public that she is finally taken from her abusive home. Ashley is sent to a small town in Texas called Patience to live with her absentee father and his new family. It's in this new home that Ashley begins to find rest but not peace as she is still plagued with memories and pain of her abuse. With the help of her true family, therapist and new friends, Ashley  begins the road of healing.
Overall, it's weird to say I loved the book when it's such a heartbreaking story, but it was very enlightening. This novel and character was needed to be written even if the subject matter is too horrid to think or talk about because it's all to real for too many people. I'm not a victim of abuse but I work with a young women and am always conscious of their situations and personal history. Ashley goes through the most unimaginable horrors as a child into teenage years but once she's "freed", it's clear her healing has only just begun and will take more than a few therapy sessions. I truly couldn't help but want to cry for Ashley as she literally tears herself apart trying to understand why and how everything evil happened to her. However, seeing Ashley find her real family and home with her dad, stepmom and stepbrother, uncle and cousin is the greatest. Plus Ashley's stepmom Bev is totally awesome.  Also note that from a literature point of view I love how well written the novel was, there was an integration of another novel used in a classroom setting as a segway into bigger issues, which was genius, the side dialogue and characters from the school are great. So if you've ever been abused or know of someone that has been this novel is worth a read.

Hope to Heal.
Hope to grow.
Hope to evolve.
Still shattered from the horrific events of her childhood years, 15-year-old Ashley Asher is barely holding it together. Battling her vicious and vile mother who still sees her as the villain and not the victim, Ashley’s stuck in a cycle of self-injury and self-hatred as a result--despite the many people who trying to pull her out of it.

Adolescence is hard, but throw in a new school, a new family, and a father she hardly knows, Ashley's need for self-destruction and pain intensifies. Her new therapist, Dr. Matt, may be unconventional with bizarre antics, but he'll do whatever it takes to pull Ashley out of the doldrums. Ashley just wants a crack at normalcy. But can her counselor and the friends and family who love her teach her that "crazy is the new normal" and that nobody has it easy?

My Thoughts: Hard Road To Healing.
This is the continuation of "Courage in Patience" and if you haven't read that novel I highly recommend it, so you can fully understand Ashley's emotional situation and her now journey of healing. However, if you are just starting the series at this novel you will not be too lost as the author died a great re-cap at the beginning.
Now fifteen and trying to recover from her near abduction and loss of safety, Ashley Asher just wants to start school like a normal  teenager. Ashley finds that school is so much more difficult when topics like family set her off emotional. Working with her therapist, Dr.Matt, Ashley is learning not to inflict self-harm when bad things or memories occur. One such thing is a court hearing against her mom and stepdad aka Satan for the attack last summer. Now along with her family issues Ashley also has school to deal with which brings up a variety of issues like racism, censorship, new relationships, teachers and subject matter. Only thing clear is Ashley is on a long journey of recovery and it is uk to her whether or not it's successful.
Overall, great follow-up novel. Having Ashley still on her journey makes it all very real since in fiction most authors would be like "she met a boy and felt complete the end." But for Ashley the process and emotions are real and still being worked through. especially concerning her mom. The fact Ashley still struggles over trying to accept her moms actions in the situation is saddening, because everyone wants her to just write the witch off but Ashely still loves her mom even if she was horrible and still refuses her truth in the situation. Now again Bev is my fav teacher/stepmom/ character, she may have had her own past but nows how to own her class even with the Pams in there. Plus she knows how to handle Ashley even when she goes all crazy or mean girl moody on everyone. Again for this story loved the integration of a classic "Farewell to Manzanar" to help illustrate subplot, which are all key contemporary issues. Also I'm also happy to see some history class mentioned, but biased love history. So if you are continue Ashley's story or just starting join Ashley on the long road to find healing and understanding.

My Thoughts: Healing Is Day By Day.
The third novel in the Patience trilogy, one can't help but already feel connected and hopeful for Ashley's healing. With each step forward a challenge emerges that can either be conquered or surrendered to. By the end of this novel it's clear the journey to find healing isn't in regard to those who harmed you but for you to find peace and strength.
Beginning the second semester of her sophomore year in high school Ashley Asher should have a grip on most of her issues. But when ever her and her boyfriend begin to do couple things, Ashley can't help but flash into times with her abuser. Everything is tainted but him and her reactions against her boyfriend send mixed signals. Ashley is confused by her feelings and becomes even more unsettled when her mother finally reaches out to her asking for her return. Things become emotionally messy again for Ashley when dealing with her mom, boyfriend, school, friends and family so temptation to slip back into old harmful habits becomes ever pressing and when asked to find another outlet she does in poems. When Ashley mails her poem out to her mom, it brings them face to face and Ashley may finally have a chance to say her peace.
Overall, another wonderful continuance in Ashley's healing. Ashley slipped up a couple of times but the power of family and friends helped her return to them. The strength it takes for her to continue is inspiring and knowing real people have experienced her reality or worse truly saddens and angers me. This may sounds kinda cliche maybe, but I can honestly say that after reading the novels in this series I understand the victims side better than I ever did before. Emotional healing is truly a process that goes day by day and to rush it or discount how much strength it takes would be a horrible impact on the person you're helping. More people need to be aware of the pain people carry around with. Anyways, if you haven't read this series I would even if the content isn't in your norm.
