How else do you spend a summer in Crimson Cove?

But revenge is a dish best served cold—ice cold.

So they tuck their anger away and prepare for the retaliation they desperately desire.

But how do you attack the ones you love the most?

Who will make it out alive?

EXCERPT
Prologue: (Lindsey)
Lain began a silent form of interrogation.
I watched in horror as the zombie girl quietly gave it all away. I wasn’t sure how much of it we could believe. There was a chance she wasn’t on our side.
It was weird seeing her that way, one moment so normal and the next a lump on a log.
She blinked, giving answers, silent Morse code, while Lainey stared as if she could read her thoughts.
My heart raced as I peeked around the corner and down the long hall, checking to ensure we were still alone.
The last couple of days had unraveled, spilling answers like we’d slit open the belly of the beast. But the answers hadn’t taken us anywhere productive yet. We had more questions than ever. And new fears. New enemies while old ones had been scratched off the list, either dead or proven not to be a threat.
I had begun to suspect the one standing next to me was smiling because he was somehow vindicated by the silent messages being shared, messages I couldn't take a guess at. Not until Lainey finished.
She didn't need to write it down. Her gifts were intense.
Lainey watched her eyes, using the system of blinks that somehow, she could see, translate, create a sentence with, and recall with precise detail.
It was another moment where I sat in awe of her.
       One of the many.
Even if I now had a hard time being envious of this gift.
Thanks to recent events, I saw the difference in the way we lived. My brain filtered and altered the details, plucking moments and emotions to spare my sanity. Hers did her no service.
Her brain, if anything, was against her.
Like a punishment. Recalling every horror with pristine detail.
The minutes of watching Lainey mentally recording were long, made longer by the silence.
The old creepy house continued to make me uncomfortable. The silence was a ticking timer, and at any moment something or someone could burst through the walls.
It was huge, one of the old mansions no one owned anymore, not even the wealthy who were upgrading to penthouses in Tribeca. No, this was five stories of antiques and relics and dark corners to hide in.
“That’s everything?” Lainey asked as she finished the last of the flash cards. “Okay,” she spoke like she was on the phone, and we couldn't hear the other side of the conversation.
Except in that moment, Lainey turned, still crouching, seemingly afraid to move. Her eyes were wide and glistened with terror as she whispered to us in a tone that made my stomach drop, “We have to get out of here now. Right now!”
       But she was too late.
       We were too late.
We just wouldn't know it right away.
But her pause made me think we had seconds.
       Seconds filled with heartbeats.
       Slowing heartbeats.
Not ours, ours were rapid and terrified.
