EXCERPTS
Alinthia

“It will be enough when I tell you it’s enough, Alinthia,” Director Tanner says, spearheading the posse who shoot disparaging looks in my direction.
Screw them.
I’m done with this.
I don’t want to kill anyone else, so I lie. “I was trying to be discreet, Director Tanner,” I add, gracing him with a fake smile. “Using my powers like this drains me, and I’m close to my limit. I’d rather not risk it. Unless you don’t care if one of them gains the upper hand and ends me?” I challenge.
“You have been training for hours upon hours every day, and I’ve witnessed no such thing.”
“This is completely different. Torching a living, breathing being is not the same as lasering a piece of stone!”
A rotund man with a protruding belly whispers in the director’s ear. “Very well, Alinthia. One more assailant, and we’ll call it a day.” The director talks into an earpiece, whispering instructions, and I spin around, a sense of relief washing over me.
But it’s premature.
A whirring sound above my head captures my attention, and I tilt my head back, looking up. A large metal weapon of some sort has appeared through a hole in the roof and all sense of relief evaporates. “Stay up here with us, Alinthia,” the director instructs, only confirming my suspicions.
On the ground, a short man with silver dreadlocks spits abuse at me in a foreign tongue while he paces the ground, shaking his fists. I watch in horror as a beam of red light shoots from the weapon, capturing the man in a hazy bubble. He’s instantly frozen and mute and completely unmoving under the red haze. The bubble elevates off the ground a few feet, twisting from side to side, with the immobile male trapped inside.
“Allow us to demonstrate our latest weapon,” Director Tanner tells his captive audience. They all inch forward, eager to watch more death and destruction. My stomach sinks, and I bite my tongue to keep from ripping them a new one.
A piercing sound reverberates off the walls, and the red beam from the weapon pulsates, growing thicker as it penetrates the bubble, eliminating the male in a second. Tiny particles of matter float through the air, and that’s all that’s left of him. I feel sick to the pit of my stomach.
Holy shit. What kind of technology has Zorc shared with the government, and what other kind of weapons do they have? The fact the humans have this kind of tech does not instill a warm and cozy feeling.
A loud round of applause sickens me. I want to turn around and berate them, but what’s the point? The humans have already proven they have little regard for other lifeforms. Unless we can offer them something, we are expendable.

- SYNOPSIS -
We offer our wounds and scars. Understanding that’s part of what makes us beautiful.
Nora finally has her beloved sister Frankie back but that’s just the beginning of their struggles. She must now become Kite. A stronger, more independent version of herself. A King. A guardian.
And Kettle has Kite’s heart. She gives it freely. But as he holds it, dear and close like a lost treasure, something holds him back: A feeling that he doesn’t deserve good things. A looming shadow that threatens to separate them. Kettle must accept that he is also Hiro: A Japanese American with every right to happiness and freedom.
Because Hiro loves Kite. And Kite won’t wait forever for him to tell her.
But they’re standing on icy ground. As the leverage they had on Kite’s abusive father wavers and life on the street affects Frankie’s health, the challenges threaten to break their bond.
Snow is gathering at the station doors and doubts are piling high. They must rely on each other. Believe in the magic that got them this far. If they don’t, it’s not just their future in jeopardy but the fates of all the street kids in their care. All the Kings.

EXCERPT

Frankie Comes Home…
Paying for a hot dog in pennies and dimes is embarrassing. Being two pennies short and having the hot dog stand guy take pity on us was completely humiliating. We’re skinny. I just hope the Kings haven’t eaten everything we had stored away.
Without Kin and Keeps, there’s been a little more to go around. My shoulders sag. Now there are more mouths to feed. My fingers scrape the insides of my pockets, searching for a coin that maybe got snagged in the seams. If I turn them inside out, I really will look like a street urchin. I’m the pirate who opens the treasure chest, finds he’s been beat, and opens it again just to rub it in. I snort.
We wait for a large crowd to head for the subway and melt in. Frankie’s eyes are as wide as a sliced moon as we weave and duck. Eyes on each other, hands gripped tightly.
Kite pushes Frankie’s head under the turnstile as I pay with our last coin. She presses her back into me. The smell of faint perfume, the last of her old life, and salt, the new, coming from her hair. As I reach around her to push the stile, a two for one, her breath catches. I let my hand rest on her waist for a second. Let myself imagine we’re a couple on our way home from a shopping trip, and then it falls like so many un-granted wishes into a fountain.
Leaning close to her ear so she can hear me, I hold my breath, thinking inhaling any more of her sweetness may actually kill me. “Ready?”
She nods. Her cheek brushing my lips.
We take our route to the secret door. To the home we now share like kids playing house, only far too real.
Frankie, to her credit, rolls with the punches. Punch one: Hot dogs instead of roast beef and gravy for dinner. Punch Two: Cheating our way through the subway. Punch Three… I knock on the King’s door, and Krow answers. He looks us up and down, slick and distrustful for a moment, then breaks into a grin. “Kettle! Kite!” he shouts. “Kettle and Kite are home.” He stares at my hands. When he sees there’s no food—only a suitcase—he quickly looks away. But there’s no hiding his disappointment.
Frankie squeezes her way through the doorway into the vast, abandoned subway tunnel. My home. My refuge. And now hers. Blinking, she stands on her tiptoes. Lip in teeth. “Holy hell!” she shouts, and several Kings look her way.
Kite flushes pink, then taps her sister’s shoulder. “Frankie!” she chastises. “Language.”
We step inside, and Frankie swings her head from side to side. “I mean tank you, holy hell.”
We both chuckle, eyes connecting over the top of her head.
Punch three: “This is where we’re going to be staying for a while,” Kite’s voice chases after a galloping Frankie as she jumps from bed to bed. She is the spokes of a traveling star. She is the light you can’t catch.
Frankie doesn’t hear her, and Kite runs to catch her sister. I drag the case inside, plonk it on Kin’s bed. Now Kite’s to share with her sister.
Finally, Frankie stops running and presses a palm to her chest as she wheezes. Kite rushes to her, and she puts both hands on her sister’s shoulders. “Are you okay?”

Punch four is for me, and I feel it sock me right in the guts. As I watch them, I know. Like really know that I would do anything to help them. They are instantly and permanently part of this family. And it scares me.

- SYNOPSIS -
According to the press, Phoebe Pope and teen movie star Colten Chase are no longer an item—which is just how the happy new couple like it. And yet there’s trouble in paradise . . .
Phoebe is haunted by dreams that show her things she can’t possibly know about—including a pact between Colten and a wanted assassin. In the daylight, she struggles to keep a newly emerging power hidden, even as her hands itch to wield it.
Meanwhile, in the wake of their escape from a Vigo crèche, Phoebe and her fellow Hyphas study under lock and key at the Campus Below. As the foursome wait to see who among them will fulfill the prophecy, someone dear to Phoebe is kidnapped by a powerful Vigo determined to use her to spy on the Shaper royalty. When the Hyphas are called to the Royal Court, Phoebe refuses to heed warnings of imminent danger for she will do whatever it takes to rescue her loved one.
But once at court, nothing is as it first appears. A sinister force controls some royals, while others whisper behind closed doors about forbidden alliances. And as Phoebe draws on her courage to complete the task set by her enemy, she makes a startling discovery—one that upends her father’s memory.
With dangerous conspiracies surfacing, Phoebe must uncover what the Royal Shapers really want from her, and decide whether there’s room for Colten in her unraveling life.

My Rating:  ðŸ“”📔📔📔📔
My Thoughts: Definitely Trouble In Paradise.
This novel is the second book on the series and I highly suggest reading the first novel before reading this story. Compared to the first novel I'd say this book has about 4x as many surprise and Omg moments. Oh and the ending FYI is just mean, not in a bad way, just in a teasing cliffhanger cause now I want more, like right now!
Trying to keep their relationship out of the press so no outside drama can interfere, Colten and Phoebe, have "broken up" amicable of course. So when Phoebe finds herself dreaming of Colten and others she loves, she begins to worry that a new power may be manifesting as her conversion draws near. For Phoebe and her fellow Hyphas, their conversion has sparked a special occasion as it is tied to a special prophecy. The Royal Shapers have summoned them to court, where instead of support the Four find lies, whispers, and   a secret. To survive Phoebe must once again discover who her true allies are and which are the enemies.
Overall, great sequel that makes me want more! I'm definitely hooked on this series, because I just like Phoebe. She loves to be simple, but lives in a totally complicated world. I am super pissed at the death in this novel that got me crying, so I'm hoping that person perhaps didn't really get killed by the evil Immortal One. But anyways, I'm glad this book offered more of the Four because they need to start working together with they crazy cool powers, and not sure how they'll reunite but when they do it'll great. Also still not a huge fan of Colten but at least he's trying to be more helpful this time around, though not sure how as you'll see where they all end up. Seriously need to know the next part of the now.

My Thoughts:  Shapers vs. Vigos!
It's been a while that a book had engrossed me and this plot has obviously been well crafted. The introduction into a new world of shapeshifter hidden but living among humans while maintaining their hierarchy, social networks, history and secrets is fascinating fiction. The female lead is strangely relatable and had found herself in this shaper world, but not really part of it, until awful things happened and action was required.
Deciding to enroll in the prestigious Green Lane Academy, after the death of her father, Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Pope should be excited to begin a new phase over life. The school not only hosts a top notch academic environment, but is a cover for the Campus Below which is a shape-shifters spy academy. Having two schedules for classes above and below is hard to keep up with, especially when per. Admins instructions extra training is added to bring her and others up to date on shifter ways. However, circumstances at the school begin to change as the tutors lessons become less hypothetical and the enemy they all fear comes too near. Even covering up the issues from below campus becomes a balancing act for Phoebe, whose life is now more than a little scrutinized thanks to her new crush teen heartthrob actor Colten Chase. So as the pressure from a prophecy begins to build and the enemy comes closer and closer still, Phoebe faces the hard task of deciding who she can trust and who is the liars amongst allies.
Overall, great young adult shifter read. Honestly, I think this is my first YA shifter read that was purely all about shifters. As a first novel in a series this book definitely opened up the setting and world to me perfectly. I'm just sad I can't see one of the conversion take place. Though the author does sprinkle in an illustration after a chapter or two. Now my favorite characters are Phoebe (obviously) and Hayley, got love having a bff relationship. Phoebe is the lead girl the heroine, she's also all about photography so no matter what she awesome. Hayley is Phoebe opposite and all things girly so she helps Phoebe embrace everything, including opening herself to liking Colten. I'm excited for the next novel especially since the story was building and the Four are definitely special. So if you like animal shifters who are training to be spy's against their enemies who hunt humans as  energy source, this book will peak your interest.

EXCERPT #1
Other girls—some of the youngest ones from the kitchen—came from the brush. Smoke clung to them like a shroud, and tears had run in rivers down soot-stained cheeks. Ginny, the youngest at six, ran to Jemma and attached herself like a limpet to the older girl’s legs.
“Where is everyone else?” Robin asked, glancing between them and then back at the flaming manor. “Where is—where’s—” Her face heated even as the rest of her body grew chilled, and she stuffed her first in her mouth to muffle her scream.
“We are the only ones.”
Robin looked up at Kitty, surprised to find herself on her knees in the damp grass. She curled her shaking fingers into fists, and then rested them on her thighs. “How—what happened?”
“That man,” the girl went on, absently twisting her skirt in her hands. “The one who’d been courting you… he came for you in the night. When he couldn’t find you, he gathered everyone in the great hall.”
“Except you lot?” Jemma inquired.
“He was hurting her.” Kitty’s eyes took on a glossy quality. “He had Maggie by the hair, and he was hurting her. She had Ginny behind her, protecting her. I—I hit him over the head with a candle stand.”
“We went through the old tunnel,” another voice piped up. Maggie slipped her hand into Kitty’s. “Me and Kitty and Ginny.”
“And my—my mother?” Robin took a deep, shuddering breath.
“She kept her secret. We heard ‘im, shouting. He wanted to know where you was.” Ginny, this time. She wandered away from Jemma, and Robin opened her arms for her to nestle into. She’d helped Jemma look after the younger servants on the sly for years. Whether they’d been orphaned at birth or left to the streets, Jemma had brought them each back to the manor, and she’d given them a home and a hope the rest of the world didn’t offer. “She didn’t tell, Robin. She didn’t tell him where you was.”
“I heard Charlotte say you were gone,” Maggie said quietly. “She’d gone to your mother’s chambers to tell her. Miss Jemma was gone, too, and so was your bow.” She shrugged, a delicate lift of her shoulders. “We all thought you had gone to the field.”
“And she said nothing?” Robin’s heart beat hard against her ribcage.
“Lady was very brave,” Ginny murmured.
“She was,” Robin agreed. “Like you are. You all.” She looked at each of the other girls, who stared back, clearly waiting.
It hit her then—they were waiting for her. With the only survivors of the manor in front of her, and her mother dead—God rest her soul, God hold them all in His hand—it occurred to her in that moment. She was the Lady of Lockesly.
EXCERPT #2
Robin stood in front of Much, Jemma’s staff in her hands and raised as though she were going to swing for Much’s head. Much, with a look of intense concentration on her round face, gripped a stick and let Jemma reposition her feet and hands as necessary.
“Steady your weight,” Jemma said quietly. “You want to have a strong base, but you need to be able to move quickly.”
“If I bring this down, you almost want to rise to meet it instead of letting it push you back,” Robin added.
“Stay ahead of it, then.” Much braced, and Robin brought the staff down slowly enough for Much to anticipate the movement and react accordingly.
“Balance.” Jemma adjusted her elbow. “The last thing you want is to be knocked on your arse because then you’ve got to dodge the attack and get back on your feet, which is tricky.”
Much smiled wryly. “Is that why Robin shoots them from a distance?”
She giggled. “Probably, but have you seen her when she’s got to use her bow like a staff?”
“It’s a good, solid yew bow.” Robin put a little more pressure against Much’s stick to see what would happen, and grinned brightly when the younger girl stayed strong and balanced. She even pushed back a bit, and Robin’s grin sharpened.
Robin leaned away, slid the staff down her palms to a different grip, and drew back in preparation to jab for somewhere in Much’s midriff.
“Now, if you’re very quick and confident, then you can swing down and knock it aside.” Jemma guided Much’s hands and arms into the movement, and used the stick to deflect Robin’s attack. It happened slowly, so Much could ease into it.
“That’s going to hurt if you get hit with it,” Robin said, snapping her arms back as though she were going to try stabbing forward again. “It’s going to crack or break your ribs if it connects, and there’s no shame in jumping out of the way.”
Jemma put her hands on Much’s waist and helped her swerve her hips to the side and out of the line of fire from the staff in Robin’s hands. “Swerve first, and then try to knock it out of the way. If you can somehow knock it out of her hands, that’s great, but usually you won’t get someone to part with their weapon.”
“Especially men,” Robin added. “That’s who you’ll be against, most likely.”
Much froze.
Robin lowered her staff and rested one end of it on the toe of her boot like she frequently did with her bow. She rubbed the side of her nose and softly said, “It’s…it’s ugly. There’s nothing dignified about it because someone is actively trying to hurt you and your focus is on making sure they can’t.”
She lowered the stick. “And you want to hurt them back.”
“Only to give yourself enough time and space to get away,” Jemma added gently. “If it comes down to it, whether it’s them or you, we’d always rather have you.”
“It’s a difficult choice to make, Much.” Robin reached out and wrapped her fingers around Much’s wrist. “We’d rather none of you lot – you, Kitty, and Maggie – have to make it.”
The implication sunk in a bit, and Much took a deep breath only to blow it out again. “Right.” She readjusted her grip on the stick and raised it once more. “Again?”
“Absolutely,” Jemma said. “Remember what I told you about your elbows.”
Robin smiled sharply and tightened her fingers around the staff.
