"Wed's Wonderings & Wanderings": Rainy Days & Dad's Cookies

This past week we got the rain we've been promised for weeks. It rained one day for a good few hours, of course those few hours just happened to be when my sister and I were about to head out for froyo, but those plans obviously changed to soup and blankets instead.

When it rains in SoCal it's like the world has ended. People suddenly can't remember how to drive, because either they drive like grannies or speed like nascar racers, neither are safe together with or without rain, which makes driving in the rain a pain in the butt. Plus the rain makes everything just seems so sad, without our sun it's like our spirits gone. We make jokes about it but its the truth we function best by solar power.
I know that when it rains all I want to do is stay home,  curl up in bed with a book and eat my family's special rainy day cookies. Since I was a kid my dad would bake these delicious oatmeal cookies with walnut, but ONLY when it rained! My friends even new about these cookies because when it did rain, that one day out of the year, they'd be after me at lunch to get one of my cookies. I swear those things are the bomb, but my papa holds to his rule that he won't make them for us unless it rains. Which in SoCal is like seriously maybe once a year, hence our current statewide drought. So when we see raindrops I run to turn on that oven. If you can't tell I pray for rain, but maybe for not all the right reasons.

"Wed's Wonderings & Wanderings": Goodbye, My Loving Pet ♥

Today marks a week and a half since we had to say goodbye to our wonderful precious Zoe, or Zoey Girl as I liked to say. Actually, I used to call her stupid girl sometimes because she had such a dopey face when she ran, it was sooo cute but looked ridiculous. I loved how I could bend her ears back to make her look like Yoda or know that when I parked in the driveway shed run up to the gate and begin howling at me in conversation asking me to let her in since I was home. Now I can't even walk into our laundry room because that was her room or walk in the backyard because Zoey won't be there.

My "puppy" dog was 14 yrs and 9 months old at her passing making her almost a 100 in dog years. Up until the last few weeks of her life she had remained her usual puppy like self being full of life and spirit. But it wasn't until my dad mentioned it was time to do the right thing by our dog that I finally opened my eyes to the fact my Zoey wasn't herself. No longer was she running, howling or licking our faces; instead she would stare vacantly at us and not wagging her tail.

So finally after much quarrel and denial, we decided to let Zoey go to find peace. That day was one of the hardest days I've endured. I've lost loved ones and this was just the same, Zoey had been a fixture in our family and lives for 14 years. When we first got her it was because a friend had just decided they didn't want her shortly after adopting her, so I immediately jumped at the chance for her, I was only 9 turning 10 at the time. So to grown up with her and to now come home and have my puppy not be here is a huge hole in our house.

People have told us we should start looking for a new dog. Ironically enough I had been looking into getting myself a puppy just a few months ago, but now it feels wrong. Logically I know there is a dog out there needing a loving owner and so I will eventually get another dog, but emotionally I'm not sure I'm ready yet. Zoey was never planned, she came into our lives a few years after the passing of my first dog Lucky, but boy did she fill our lives with joy only a pet can bring.

From now on I will continue to miss my beautiful Zoey and accept that we will have to adjust our lives around to not having her in it from now, which will be emotional for a time. Zoey was perfect was the perfect fit to our family and an excellent dog, even when she got the entire house up at 2am trying to get that cat outside that only she smelled. We were blessed to own such a great dog who loved everyone, barked at dangerous things, hit us with her wagging tail, dug holes for no reason and killed rodents, birds and lizards like the mixed mutt she was. Love you my Zoey girl, I'll miss your dopey grin.

"Wed's Wonderings & Wanderings": June Gloom, Graduation, Memories and Overall Nostalgia

June is a unique time for California, residents find we really enter the summer months and starting hitting the hotter temperatures. There is of course the June gloom too, which starts off in the morning and burns away by noon. If you've never experienced the gloom, don't worry its nothing special, just a light fog, but it obscures our precious sun making us wonder: should we bundle up? And must we wear shoes instead of flip-flops?

I jest of course, but seriously though, June is the time when the schools get out and graduations commence. This past Thursday my baby brother graduated from high school, I couldn't even cry this time like I did for my little sister, because I was just so proud of him. He was such a pain trying to get him to do his school work, but in the end he finished Cum Laude and won various department awards. The fact that he was the last to graduate from the same high school as my sister & I only made the ceremony all the more special for our family.

Then there was Father's day on Sunday, who doesn't love to celebrate their father or father figure in their life. I love my papa, he is seriously the most selfless, loving, and understanding man on the planet and I could never hope to have a better dad. Sadly Father's day for my family on my dad's side will always be a bit hard to celebrate, since my cousin passed away two years ago this past Thursday from a 5 year on and off again battle with cancer. His passing was(is) still hard for my family as it was around Father's Day, so my beloved grandpa, who was basically his father, takes my cousins passing very hard this time of year.  We all try extra hard to keep everyone happy around this week, especially my grandpa. And what better way to occupy ones mind than to enjoy America's favorite past time, baseball.
So off we went to spend a hot afternoon amidst a full crowd in the glorious old stadium in L.A. cheering on the Dodgers. My family ate delicious sandwiches from our favorite family deli, drank ice cold lemonade and soda, had some good old peanuts and witnessed a loss . . . again. I swear I never see a win but at least this time I got to watch two home runs back to back and had my family laughing at the fact I may be a jinx. I'm still holding on to the claim that I'm not a jinx, buuut thus far the record is not in my favor.

Either way this past week has reminded me to make every moment count and enjoy my time spent with family. I miss my cousin and I know that he would have enjoyed watching the game with all of us. So us going out and having fun with him on our minds makes him live on and not forgotten, because he will always be a part of our lives in some ways, even though he is no longer with us. All that to say June may be a bit gloomy at times but then sun will still come out to shine; And when it does you'd better go out hit the beach, park, lake anywhere you can to make memories with friends and family, because that's what truly matters in life.

"Wednesday's, Wonderings & Wanderings": Fortune in Fortune Cookies

I love eating sushi and Chinese food especially with my family and friends. At the end of every meal wether it be a lunch, dinner, takeout or sit dinner you get the bill and Fortune Cookies!
Fortune Cookies are a hit and miss thing for me taste wise. Either they are really delicious or taste like cardboard. Most are a light brown but some can be dark brown too, I even had an orange one once, that didn't taste like an orange.
But let me get to this post's point.  The best part of the fortune cookie is the fortune inside. My family loves to open them all together and read them out loud to see if we can have a "Freaky Friday" moment. If you're not familiar in the movie Freaky Friday, the new version with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsey Lohan, they open fortune cookies and read the same fortune and then find themselves inside each other's bodies. So since then we always try to find the same fortune when opening our cookies.
Well it finally happened once at our favorite family Chinese restaurant. It was my sister and myself that had the twin fortunes, as pictured above. Sadly or I should say thank God we didn't switch bodies or my poor sister would've had a hard life in my place. Since then we still look for a time we'll all have the same fortune but 5 of us getting the same fortune seems highly improbable. Well most of the time we hardly take the fortunes to heart. For example my fortune on Monday read, "Your fortune will be on your right side." Yeah brilliant fortune for me since where we were seated at the time there was a wall on my right  soooo guess I've got no fortune. But I'll just keep looking to my right side I guess.
