EXCERPT

When we reach Alex’s house, I’m not surprised to see that it’s been vandalized. With no residents to defend it, it was easy pickings. The front door’s been kicked in and the frame is splintered so it won’t close properly. A couple of the windows are broken, too. Once we’re inside, I’m relieved to see that most of the damage is limited to the kitchen. Whoever came here was looking for food and not much else. The presence of a rotting, stinking corpse on the kitchen floor probably made them hurry up and get out.

I leave Ares and Elaina to gather up any dog food and supplies they can find as I make my way down the hall to Alex’s room. Stopping in the doorframe, I grip it hard to keep myself upright. The memories and the grief come fast and hard, threatening to overwhelm me. The hospital bed is still in the room, as is most of the medical equipment that kept him alive those last few days. No one’s made the bed, so the sheets are still rumpled from Alex’s body.
The IV still hangs on the pole next to the bed, and the oxygen tank is on the floor under the bed. The needle and tubing for the IV and the cannula for the oxygen rest on the mattress where I dropped them the night I took Alex away from here to die in peace. The book we were reading together lies facedown on the mattress, open to the page where we left off. Everything is frozen in time, except the most important part. Alex is gone and he isn’t coming back.
Alex’s bookcases still droop alarmingly, although they aren’t as orderly as they once were. It appears the looters rifled through them, probably looking for stray cash tucked in the pages of the books. I force myself to cross the room and scan the shelves for anything that might indicate where Emily has gone. I also check the desk, but find nothing in either place.
I cross to the bed and can’t help myself. Picking up the pillow, I hug it to my chest, burying my nose in it. I catch the last whiff of Alex’s shampoo, the same fruity-spicy scent he always used. I’m aware this isn’t good for me and it’s not helping us with our mission, so I reluctantly put it down. But I can’t resist one other thing. Grabbing the book, I fold down the corner of the page we were on and tuck it in my waistband next to the gun. It’s sentimental and dumb, but I want to remember our reading time.
When I turn to leave, Ares is standing in the doorframe, watching me with an expression that is both pitying and concerned. I can stand the latter, but I don’t need his pity.
“Don’t say anything,” I warn as I push past him and head down the hall toward Emily’s room.
“I just came to see if you’re okay. I figured this would be hard for you.”
“Just getting up in the morning is hard for me, but I do it,” I say. “I’ll be okay.”

My Thoughts: And You're Gonna Hear Her Roar!

          Great first novel in this new series dealing in Egyptian mythology! A lot of books tend to focus on Roman and Greek but this does Egyptian ancient myths justice. Definitely looking forward to more from this young adult series that entertains and subtlety educates.

        Having grown up in a covenant in England with only one friend, Trinity is surprised to receive a visitor. When this visitor Dr. Nassri delivers news to Trinity revealing she is the long lost granddaughter of Margaret Walford a wealthy but sick woman living on the Kedilerin Ada island. Trinity finds herself whisked away to a new life on this island of cats. But instead of finding peace and answers more questions surface. After the death of her grandmother, Trinity begins to feel odd having new sensations and heighten abilities she's never had before. It's clear something is happening to her and Trinity doesn't know who to turn to for help. Once Trinity is explained her family history and its ties to the gods of Egypt, it's clear the stories aren't myths of old. Now Trinity must learn what her destiny is and help stop the evil she can feel is growing close.

        Overall, great book! I'm a big geek for all thing mythology, so this book was entertaining. The more popular form of mythology is Greek and Roman but I've enjoyed Egyptian as well since it's just as complex. I think most steer clear because of the name difficulty in being more complex than simple Zeus. Now, Trinity is definitely a heroine. Poor girl, literally, becomes rich and still stays humble only wanting to find out the truth and help others. Plus she is changing which seems worse than puberty, so props to her for not going crazy. I'm glad Trinity finds a friend in her cousin Ara, because she'll need someone to lean on and talk girl stuff out with. Oh and I loved the epic show down I the end with Trinity versus her enemy, great fight and emotional ending even if I wanted the bad person to die. So if you're looking for a young adult book based in Egyptian mythology about a girl loving cats and trying to find out who she and what she will do on the world, than this book should interest you.

My Thoughts: Mission, Break The Curse!

       This is book 2 in the Sphinx series and you'll definitely need to read book 1 "Curse of the Sphinx" before diving into this book, trust me I tried reading book 2 before 1 (by mistake) and was totally lost. The novel picks up a little after book one and continues on with the main character as she seeks out new people and more information. The writing style in this novel changes a bit from the previous book and I love the series even more.

      After fleeing the small town of Goldendale, Hope Nicholas is now hiding in Seattle with her aunt Priska. However, Hope decides she isn't content with just hiding anymore and now wants to pursue ways to break the curse of Sphinx, which has controlled the women in her family for too long. The problem is Hope is a monster hunted by Apollos' sons and she may just have to step into a house of demigods for answers. Meanwhile, Athan son of Hermes is out searching for Hope trying to find her before Skia get him or worse Apollo finds Hope. With so many gods, immortals, secrets and curses in the world around her, Hope begins to wonder who are the real monsters and will ever be able to break the curse of Sphinx?

      Overall, truly enjoyed this sequel. The first book was written in a different writing method, which took time to get used to. However, this novel had a lot more dialogue that helped connects readers to Hope and the new characters introduced. Plus there is a quite a few more fighting scenes included too. Now as the heroine, Hope definitely shows she has a lot of growing up to do as her world is one big frustrating mystery and she seems to lack wisdom and understanding. That's the one great thing about Greek mythology, it gets more twisted and twisted the more you try to untangle it. Only bummer for me personally was the serious lack of Athan in this novel. The guy only got a small portion and Hope barely lets him in at the very end, which made me want to slap her because he is obviously more awesome than a certain friend she makes in this novel. But I digress, so if you haven't read the first book do so, and then read on to get wrapped up in Hope's journey to understand herself, her history and family curse.

Hope went into the sparse guest room and closed the door behind her. She let out a long, slow exhale and leaned against the door.

“How long have you been at the conservatory?” 

Hope yelped. Turning around, she noticed Athan sitting on the edge of the bed. “Sorry.” He was quickly at her side. “I didn’t mean to startle you.” 

“Then what the Hades are you doing in my room with the light off?” Hope flicked the light on and glared at him. 

“Right.” He took a step back. “Sorry. I wanted to talk to you, and you left abruptly.” 

Hope clenched her teeth. “Oh. Well then, it’s all okay. Come on in.” Sarcasm dripped with the words. “What do you need to say?” 

Athan frowned. “What’s with the hostility? Did I do something to you?” 

She sputtered in her attempt to say anything, but words formed and disappeared before she could get them out. Finally, she said, “I trusted you.” She knew she was being irrational, but all the pent-up emotion erupted, blasting into the air between them. “I don’t even know what to believe anymore.” 

Athan reached his hand out to touch her face, but something in her expression made him hesitate before contact. He dropped his hand to his side. “I never lied to you, Hope.”
