My Thoughts: When The Geek Isn't Meek

       To say I enjoyed this novel is an understatement, I freakin L-O-V-E-D this novel and am absolutely dying for more from this series! The main character is different than most heroines who will have you laughing with and at her. Author Tiffany Snow has created another series that is sure to be a rising favorite with fans and newcomers thanks to this opening book and characters. 

         For twenty three year old computer prodigy, China Mack, life is a series of scheduled events: Monday is always pizza night, Friday is Mexican, and Tuesday night is watching tv shows in a specific order. China has her life specifically planned out, so when her boss, the Jackson Cooper of Cysnet, personally interrupts her normal work day to request her assistance on a project, China knows things are about to be shaken up. The new assignment is a highly classified government project, which comes with a hint of danger and possible espionage. The one thing China knows for certain is computer code, but people she hasn't a clue. Fortunately China's niece Mia comes to live with her and helps land her a date even under work pressure. The question is can China's love life work itself out amidst death threats?

         Overall, loved this book and want more of China! Seriously China is like my book spirit character, she has OCD tendencies that I can relate too and had me laughing so many times. China may be a bit odd but is completely real with her emotions and way of thinking making a reader love her immediately. Oh and boy does she get lucky in scoring some male attention, seriously Clark and Jackson, fine men, I'd take one. Now the tech talk in this novel gets a bit interesting but not too intricate that it's fly over ones head. The one thing I wished I could talk to China about is her fandom on few shows, because it would surely be a great conversation. So if you're a fan of computer code espionage involving a girl just trying to figure out society around her and maybe date for the first time, then this book will interest you.

Jackson looked quizzical for a moment, then turned and headed for his office. “Follow me,” he tossed over his shoulder, and I rushed to obey.

I felt eyes on me as I walked. Jackson usually only met with the managers, not the staff directly. I reported to a guy named Brad who happened to be on vacation this week. I supposed that was why I was heading into Jackson’s office instead of Brad. Whatever it was, it obviously couldn’t wait.

“Have a seat,” he said, gesturing to the seating arrangement in his office. His desk stood to one side, diagonal to the windows that lined the wall. A sofa and two chairs were arranged facing each other on the opposite side, which was where he’d pointed.

Okay then.

Sofa or chair . . . sofa or chair . . .

I stood in indecision, frantically going through the pros and cons of each seat inside my head. The chair would be good but it faces the windows and there’s a glare. I’ll be squinting. Sofa is better but what if he sits beside me, then I’ll be craning my neck to see him and my feet won’t touch the floor. The other chair is in a better location but it’s higher than the sofa and if he sits on the sofa then I’ll be above him and that may be insulting since technically I’m not “above” him—

“China,” he interrupted my train of thought, brushing past me and taking the chair I’d been leaning toward choosing. “Have a seat.”

That was a command. I could recognize the tone. So I plunked myself down in the nearest spot, which put me on the sofa. Except I’d misjudged the softness of the cushions and I sank, putting me even lower than I thought I’d be, as I faced him. I forced a smile.

“Cushy couch.”

Okay, that was something a teenager might say. Not a grown woman with degrees piled behind my name and several years of experience under my belt. My smile turned into a grimace. I started fiddling with my pen and shoved my glasses farther up my nose.

“Brad would usually be the one to hold this discussion,” he began, “but since he’s out of the office right now, I thought I’d handle it.”

My palms began to sweat and I went cold. This sounded like the beginning of a conversation I wasn’t going to like. I searched my brain, trying to think of what I could’ve done to bring about a disciplinary meeting with the CEO.

“If this is about that argument between me and Toby last week, then I want you to know it’s resolved. He dinged my Mustang and refused to admit it, but when I had the paint samples compared, they totally matched.”

Jackson gave me an odd look. Okay, that wasn’t it then.

“And I’m not the one who keeps stealing Janine’s Diet Coke from the fridge,” I blurted. “It’s Megan in accounting. I caught her but she swore me to secrecy because she saw me borrow one of Blake’s Kit Kat bars that he keeps in the freezer.” I took a breath. “Borrow’s not really the right word, I guess, since I ate it. But I did replace it the next day.” I grimaced. “And ate it again. But I really am going to bring him more. I swear.”

Still nothing. His eyes were a bit wider though. Surely that couldn’t be a good sign?

“And I’m not the one that keeps adding h-o-g to Liam’s nameplate.” The guy’s last name was Hedge. Really, he was just asking for that one.

“Or—”

“Stop!”

I clamped my lips shut.

Jackson cleared his throat. “While I appreciate your willingness to, um, clear your conscience . . .” he paused, “none of those things are why I brought you in here.”

“Then why did you?”

“I was getting to that, before your impromptu confessional.”

Oh. I shut up again.

My Thoughts: In All My Wishes, Years and Dreams, Life and Future.

      The book felt like "Sweet Home Alabama" meets "The Notebook", the story had elements of past books I've read, but felt new and just what I was looking for around Valentine's weekend. The story had the romance of "will they won't they?", but with an added element of mystery in the background. I enjoyed the easy flow of the novel and the romance between the main characters was sweet, I'd actually love more of them. 

        Busy with running her high fashion empire that caters to sheiks and princesses, Anna Baker, returns home to Riverbend to be the maid of honor for her best friend, Cynthia. However, once home Anna is confronted with her past in the form of her old sweetheart the ever charming, Liam Harrow. Liam now a rising professor at the local university has one mission, show Anna that she is his love and has been his only love since they met. Ever since Anna abruptly left with her mother, when they were still in high school, Liam has been hoping to have her back in his life. Both Anna and Liam had dreams and promised one another many things when they were young, but after Anna left their lives changed. No matter what Liam tells Anna, she can't let herself return to the place she's always considered home until she discovers what happened in the past that pulled them apart. 

       Overall, nice easy read. The story is a nice romance that isn't overly complicated and frustrating with the floundering will they won't they reader questioning. Yes, there was a time or two I wanted to yell at Anna to cut Liam a break, but knowing something or someone may have kept them apart helped assuage my reader angst. The subplot, who kept the couple apart, needed more development but then again it was just a catalyst to the romance, so a reader may not mind it not being properly concluded, especially since we are given such a sweet epilogue ending. So if you are looking for a story about a girl separated from her love only to return home an independent woman afraid to trust and love, while the man she once loved does everything he can show her he is worth making a home with, than this novel would be good to read.

He hugged her to him, holding her arms at her side so she couldn’t hit him. “It’s not too late. You’re not that old, you know.”

She squirmed, but he held tight. “And you’re getting too old to be the playboy of Riverbend. I think it’s time for you to retire that title to a new graduate.”

A shooting star bolted across the sky. “Quick! Make a wish.”

Anna slid an arm free and held his cheek, facing him. “I don’t have to.”

He dared to move closer, to hope she’d return his affection. His heart pounded with adrenaline and his breath quickened. No woman ever turned him around or flipped him upside down like she did. “Anna.”

“Shh.” She gently pressed her lips to the corner of his mouth. A shiver of excitement vibrated from the top of his head to his toes. He held onto her for dear life, hoping she’d never pull away, never leave him again.

A long silence rent the air with indecision. He released her and she slid away, only a few inches, but there might as well have been a valley of broken dreams and wishes between them.

My Thoughts: Royals, Lords, Assassins, Hunters, Healers And Messengers, Who Else Could Be Involved?

     Picking up where book one, "Messengers" left off, a reader in quickly thrown into this new story. Now that the main character knows who and what she is the plot only thickens with more questions. So if you have not read the first book you must before falling into this story filled with the intrigue and deceit of court life back in medieval times mixed in with all of the main characters problems of being a Messenger.

      Returning to her timeline should have Madeline excited, but seeing her Samuel riding away on the L train was not the welcome home she wanted. Shortly after returning home a new messenger named Ryan Preston, enters her life as a mentor to train and prepare Madeline for her coming travels. All the while, Madeline now knows the sad fact that the Samuel in her time period does not know her or recognize the love they have. Desperate to travel on her own to hopefully help spark remembrance in Samuel from his reincarnations, Madeline ends up in Medieval Portugal amidst dark political times. Thinking she is only there to deliver a message while being a gypsy, Madeline takes on the persona of Nadja. It's as Nadja that she meets Lord Samuel who is acting not at all like the boy she loves, leaving Madeline crushed and heartbroken despite how she still longs for her Samuel the Healer. Nothing seems clear and Madeline finds herself mixed up in the murky Portugal politics where assassins are involved and Hunters show up to make matters more dangerous. The only questions Madeline needs to figure out fast to return home are, what is the message and who is it for?

      Overall, loved it! Madeline was much more of a heroine in this book because she was alone, grant it Samuel was there but not really her true support since he basically didn't know her. And I loved that, now at first I hated it but I realized that tension pulled so much more growth out of Madeline that made me love her all the more as a strong female character. Really girl had to do it on her own and winning her man back by traveling to meet just to literally make a lasting impression, cool move. Now only problem I have is I'm still a bit murky on who the heck Ryan is and why he had to be introduced, especially being added as a love interest distraction type guy; so I'm hoping that's cleared up in the next book. Oh and Madeline's conflict with Malachi that too needs clarifying, because it just got weirder at the end. Anyways, I enjoyed this story more than the first and can't wait to see Madeline travel again. So if you like time travel medieval politics involving assassins and reading about the heroine having to take on her own personal enemies too all the while trying to win back her man, than I suggest reading this book after you've read the first book or you may just be lost.

My Thoughts: Fascinating Concept But Long-Winded 

       In reading the book blurb I was intrigued, but found the book rather tedious to read. The story itself was interesting at points but was too long to keep my interest in one sitting. The characters were likable but at times they seemed dry, most-likely due to the focus being on the world they lived in rather than the characters.

      Awakening in a perfect house in a new city, Walker Callaghan, finds herself unpacking but confused on how her and her mom moved somewhere new overnight. Walker is shown to her new school called the Academy where there are no tests, homework, rules or chance of death again thanks to the constant reset. This is a dream come true, except for one thing, all who attend this special school are dead. Walker with her dead pupils are children who are still developing till they ascend Up. While trying to adjust to her new circumstances Walker becomes entwined in the Reid family. Daniel Reid is the hot boy on campus but doesn't socialize, he takes care of his siblings and that's it. Walker is the only one who he talks to and she's able to get him to spill what secret he's been keeping. Daniel wants to go back to his moment of death to retrieve something and Walker has the brains to help, but insists its her way or no way. The problem is they have to face many obstacles to find the portal or even enter it, and there is a huge chance once through they may not ever make it back to the realm of Academy. 

      Overall, it was okay. I thought the author had a great concept but the book was too long. There were parts that repeated already mentioned points, which only made the scenes drag on. The fact the author chose to expound on the scenery and realm, basically the rules of the books universe, which was obviously necessary but it all added to making the story longer. I kept hoping for more school scenes and definitely more Walker and Daniel moments. The couple scenes were definitely small and considering how "advanced" their relationship grows, i.e. Walker moves in as a pseudo mom, I wish we were given more of just them talking, flirting and interacting. So in the end if you want a paranormal dimensional story about children living out their time of development in a "school" while encouraged to explore but told never seek to return back to life but kids being kids do the ONE thing they are told not to, than this book may interest you but I probably won't follow the series.
