However, the small bit of solace she’s found is quickly shattered when a group of vampires walk into the bar where she works and turn her life upside down. Looking only to stop for a few nights and have a good time, Julian never expected to stumble across someone like Quinn.

Determined to keep her free from the vampires looking to use her as a weapon, Julian is stunned to discover himself starting to care for the mysterious woman with a dark past she’s unwilling to reveal. It doesn’t take him long to realize that the vampires after her are only a part of the problem. This quiet little town is hiding a violent secret of its own; a secret that not only threatens the town, but Quinn in particular.

 PROLOGUE

Fire and ice licked over her flesh. The fire was due to the pain lancing through her body from the knives driven through the palm of her hands and her stomach. It felt like the fire was consuming her, burying her within its raging depths, devouring her very soul. The ice, well the ice was from the weakness stealing through her and dousing the fire beneath it. The sensations were so overwhelming and contradictory to each other that they briefly doused the shrill screams of those around her. Her family. Tears slid down her cheeks. She jerked at her hands but the knives had been buried deep into the wood floor beneath her. Blood trickled down from the wound on her right temple, and the slice down the center of her chin. Pinned down, she could only lay helplessly as she listened to the dying sounds of those she loved.

Like some kind of ghoulish painter throwing paint at a canvas, blood splashed across the family pictures hanging on the wall and one of the many screams went abruptly silent. Shock wearing off, she jerked against the blades securing her to the floor. She had to get to her family, had to try and save them somehow. A scream of frustration and agony burned in her throat. The fire licked back over her body as she strained to tear her hands free of the knives. She tried to arch up in an attempt to dislodge the one in her stomach but a wave of blackness washed over her, threatening to bury her within its depths. Panting heavily, she fell back on the floor. She couldn’t pass out; it would be certain death if she did.

A tsking sound from her right caused her to turn her head in that direction. She blinked back the blood, sweat, and tears clogging her lashes and blurring her vision. “Such a shame.” She shrank away from the hand brushing over her forehead. “Such a fighter.”

A man’s face loomed over her. A face she knew she’d remember for the rest of her life, for however long that might be given her present circumstances. “Shh child,” he murmured as he continued to brush her hair back. “It will all be over soon.”

His blue green eyes swirled with malicious glee, his wide nostrils flared as he inhaled the scent of the blood pooling beneath her. The high arch of his cheekbones gave his face a rat-like appearance which she found completely appropriate for this horrible monster. A mole at the corner of his left eye had a long, creepy hair curling from it. His thin lips pulled back to reveal his lengthy, razor sharp fangs.

A cry of protest escaped her but she could do nothing to stop him from driving his fangs into her throat. More fire lanced over her skin as she fought against the monster pulling her blood from her body, but even as the heat crept in so did the ice. Weakness slipped into her limbs, up through her belly and toward her chest.

She wasn’t ready to die, she’d finally started to live, but just as she couldn’t escape the knives pinning her body to the floor, she couldn’t escape this monster feeding off of her in greedy, slurping pulls. The ice crept further up, dousing the fire beneath its crushing flow. She wasn’t ready to give in but she had no choice in the matter as her heart began to slow. It gave a dull beat before pausing for endless seconds then pumping again.

The monster above her pulled away and wiped the blood away from his mouth. “Delicious,” he purred before rising to his feet and walking away. It was only after he’d gone that she realized how quiet the room had become. Her family. She felt the overwhelming need to cry but she didn’t have the energy to muster a single tear. She could only stare at the blood-coated photos across from her as her breathing became shallower and her heartbeats further apart. The distant murmur of voices drifted to her but she couldn’t make them out as the ice slid up to her neck. She heard the click of the door closing and realized the monsters had left but it didn’t matter. Nothing mattered anymore as the ice encompassed her, her heart finally stopped beating, and the world went completely black.

My Thoughts: Bit of A Rough Start But Decent RomCom In The End

Normally the RomComs I read are set in similar situations, i.e. bunch of girlfriends finding their way in life, girl likes boy but all just doesn't connect for bit in a haha way, BFFs try to help get someone married, engaged, matched, etc. However, the difference with all those books in comparison to this one was two things: 1. The main characters age, and 2. The sex. Other than those 2 points, this book was a RomCom, but it definitely started out emotionally low for me. It wasn't until mid book that finally I connected with main character and I really got into the story.
Pastry Chef Pricilla Westcott has but one passion in life baking and with that passion she only has one love Wine, and coffee a close second to wine. Baking is what brings her joy in life which is full of anger and bitter feelings after being cheated on by her Ex-husband who left her after he fell in love with the next door neighbor, aka the she-devil. Pricilla has her life now set in bake, drink, bake, drink, wallow and then throw eggs at she-devil's empty house. It's not until one day during her normal routine that she finds next door rented out to a too hot for himself, Trent Walker. The man is too hot for Pricilla to take and their chemistry far to explosive for them both. But Pricilla doesn't want the affair it's too reminiscent of her exes past. So will Pricilla give into powerful Trent and their chemistry or will she hide away and stay made at the cards life dealt her, baking and drinking her life away?
Overall, I grew to enjoy the book. At first I was not into the beginning having Pricilla being so bitter and rather a downer, sure she was funny, but a downer and a heavy drinker. Then Trent and Pricilla get together super fast and I'm like "Well umm . . okay? Bit fast." Like I said it took me till the middle of the book to really like it. Probably because I finally understood a bit more of Pricilla and got past all the sex, so it was more about the relationship of the characters instead of their lustful attraction. In the end I was rooting for a happily ever after for Pricilla, because she deserved a good ending. Of course she also needed to work on a few things, but I wanted her to have good come in her life. In the end the book was an R rated RomCom, kinda like Bridesmaid, but just Kristen Wiig's character. Oh and on a side note I will always wonder how Pricilla never got fat, I know it says she works out, but geesh even her customers probably got fat from the pastries she sells out. Guess that's why it's fiction. Either way, so if you want a story with laughs (and don't mind some sex scenes) about how a 31 yr old divorcee who finds joy in baking, drinking wine, and egging the neighbors house for revenge finds love with a sexy man who literally just charges right into her life and sweeps her off her feet, this book would be a good choice to try.

My Thoughts: Fantastic Story With An Even Better Message, More Books Need To Be Like This!

More books need to be written like this book! Once I was done with the story I was like, "Yes! Go Girl! Go!" It leaves you with an empowering and freeing message that just needs to be shared. Plus there's a love story in there too that's rather cute to boot. IN FACT. . . I just figured out the perfect song for the main characters "Everytime We Touch" by Cascada, if you know the hit then you'll know a little hint.
Leigh Anne Davis is driving back home, literally running home to escape her problems back in Boston. Her issues seem almost surface at first like 'Oh she just had a bad breakup or something.' But no her situation is so much deeper and heartbreaking. All that to say Leigh Anne finds her self in an accident with a tree, unable to get herself out she gives up hope and thinks she'll have to wait till morning to be found. That's when Knox Warner comes to her rescue. He helps her out and they make an instant connection in a way Leigh Anne wasn't expecting, he gets her inner pain.  Knox isn't the man her parents, especially her mom, want for her, but Leigh Anne is finding he's the one she needs especially since no one understands she is not the same girl she once was, not when what happened to her that one night back in sophomore year has changed her forever. The secret is something her parents want her to bury it and move on, but it's something Leigh Anne knows she will never be able to forget. It's then that Leigh Anne has to make a choice to follow her parents lead and go their chosen path for her or set out on her own and make her own way no matter how it may go.
Overall, I really liked this book. I found it very impressive in touching on a subject matter most books and authors don't go into, which is saddening since it's seems to be more prevalent than any one wants to admit or think about. Now I may not have been through anything like or near what Leigh Anne went through, but those feeling of wanting to be independent when you have family and friend expectations on you as to who you are and how you should act. That is something I think any person especially young women feel. And that feeling of wanting to break from social expectations is not necessarily a feeling of rebellion, it's a feeling of wanting to become self assured in being who you want to be. The writing style was good and it was easy to enjoy the characters too. I can easily see myself buying up the rest of the series to follow this author and see if the fellow characters in the story get a HEA.

My Thoughts: The "Wakes UP!" Version Is the Best

The first version, Sleeping Beauty, is completely one of a kind and was a great read full of unique characters, suspense, mystery, romance and a bit of humor, but sadly I was definitely flummoxed and disappointed by the ending. The story had so much momentum and promise in the beginning, but the ending just felt wrong. Sooo I was ecstatic to find the author ended up writing an alternate ending version that changes from Chapter 11 onward, and was then republished as a second version of the book to satisfy readers like myself. The result was, Sleeping Beauty Wakes Up!, and it is exactly how I wanted the story to end. The ending now makes sense and gives me that feel good feeling after reading a good book.
The story is told from the main characters perspective, a young woman named Claire, who suffers from KLS, also known as Sleeping Beauty Syndrome. Claire is often not taken seriously due to her small stature and her KLS condition, which makes her fall asleep at any time in any place for an unknown time all while she continues to live in a semi-conscious state, the other downside she will later awaken with no recollection of her actions when she was "asleep". Paging Doctor Brendan Charmant, he's the new doctor assigned to her rare case. Claire and Brendan have an insta loathing reaction with an underlining flirtation of attraction. Things go wrong when Claire awakens after one of her Sleeping Beauty spells and is told by her bother, West, and her brother’s boyfriend (and Claire's best friend/crush) Davin, that she has been dating Brendan seriously for a while. Claire has no idea what her life has become and everything is hear say from her friends and family because of her sleeping beauty syndrome.  From then on Claire tries to piece back her life and find the truth about what happened during her last big black out. The story escalades into a messy situations that will bring to light who Claire's real Prince Charming is meant to be, but first allegations are made, people are hurt, a case is brought to court and another surprise for all is revealed.
Overall, I hope you are intrigued enough to give this book a try as both the old and new version are well written and a great story, but ultimately the version that gets my biggest endorsement will always be Sleeping Beauty Wakes Up! Again the ending just made more sense, from how the plot was going and the relationships had been heading the obvious ending lies within the pages of “Wakes UP!” Now, by all means read both if you so dare, however I will only be keeping the Wake Up! continuously with me on my eReader.
