My Thoughts: Meaningful and Deep Y.A. Books

These Young Adult books are much more than your typical sports genre high school centered nerd girl dates popular jock stories. Amber Garza has taken the basic storyline adding meaningful dialogue concerning social issues and current problems in society that touch everyone from teenagers to adults.
For the Win and For the Game are both about London Miller and Cooper Montgomery. The situations they go through are so heartbreaking and one too many can relate to; London is in remission from a tough fight with cancer and Cooper lives with his grandparents after tragically losing his parents. Reading about them having to deal with such heavy issues while being so young is tough, but you fall for them and love to see their growth, especially in the second book when they learn to work out a few relationship kinks.
For the Rush is super cute, sad and touching! Had me tearing up. I didn't know how I'd feel having new characters since I loved London and Cooper so much, but Holden and Chloe fit right in my book heart. Chloe is a solid female role model, she knows who she is and what's right. Yes, Chloe has insecurities but trying to work through them and start afresh each school is brave. Holden is a genuine gentleman who a girl can just swoon over. Love this couple! And what they go through together is just unimaginable but something more YA writers should bring attention to, specially when bullying is involved as a first step.
For the Game again I'm sucked into another couple! Addison and Swayer, two broken people who find they can help heal when they are together. Addison is dealing with the suicide of her brother and Sawyer is dealing with the aftermath of the school shooting. Addison pushed people away to wallow in her pain while Swayer felt alone in his loss. It's then they find each other after Swayer basically pushes into Addison's solitary life.
Overall, this series just leaves you feeling emotional but good. The couples God through situations which are relevant and all to real to many teenagers today making each book so much more worthwhile to read. I'm all for fiction and fantasy but it's these kinds of books that I hope reach a wider range of audience since they carry a hopeful message. So if you are looking for a meaningful young adult reads with great characters you can't help love involved in contemporary social issues, these books are definitely worth a read.

Now be forewarned listed below are each books descriptions none are too revealing BUT still read at your own risk. I dare ya!

My Thoughts: Perfect Life, Maybe or Maybe Not?
Based on the old saying of being careful of what you wish for, this romance is a simple read that is both funny and enlightening. The main character finds out what her life could be and does so in a slightly humorous way. In the end readers understand wishing for a fairytale life doesn't always your idea of a perfect life.
Working in marketing firm and progressing up the promotion latter, Harley Simpson, finds herself set with everything except that elusive prince. The man she can't help feeling adolescent around is none other than her boss Ethan Prince, who is too good to be true, if only he'd notice her. After a night out with her girlfriends, Harley awakens to find herself a stay home mom to not one but two girls and is married to . . Ethan! Harley wants to thrilled but can't help but freak at her wish coming true without any ideas how. That is until her fairy godmother comes in and lays it all out for her. Turns out the world Harley is in is all wrong and it's up to Harley to figure out what is right and what isn't including who her prince really is? Oh and if Harley can't understand her true desires she may be stuck in this new reality for good.
Overall, nice quick entertaining read but wished for more depth in a few areas. Harley is quickly introduced and then thrown into her new world, which she lives in for 90% of the story. I never connected to Ethan at all making it easy to not feel anything towards him, which included hate. Though the same could be said about any of the other side characters, flushing them out could have helped bring more out Harley's character too. I mean most of the time Harley substituted emotions for wine, so there were quite a few hangovers as you can imagine. So if you are looking for a cute contemporary dream to reality "romance" where the girl comes to the conclusion your true dream may be different than your fairytale, than this book would be good to read.

Synopsis:
Secrets beget secrets. The curse that befell the Hollows clan has left them incapable of producing male offspring. To extend their bloodline, they have formed a covenant with the serpentine Ophidians, who give them children. In return, the Hollows must keep these monstrous creatures well fed, though the details of the procurement are so abominable that the truth is never revealed to the other clans. In their homeland of Matikki, they live like outcasts.

Through a series of chance discoveries, the secrets of the ancient curse unfold before a warrior named Writhren Hollow. Is her purely female clan the result of a lapse of divine providence, or are the Hollows themselves victims of an enslavement scheme?

If Writhren frees her clan from the covenant, she risks the wrath of the Ophidians and the future of her bloodline. If she keeps the truth of the curse to herself, she is a traitor to her own kind. Either way, she will suffer for what she must do.

This is not a story of redemption, but regret. This is Writhren’s story.

My Thoughts: Too Quick To Anger Breeds Dangerous Consequences
Going into this book with the knowledge that this is a prequel to a series will help a reader quickly acclimate to the stories plot, characters, and general story telling. The world in which the story takes place is fantastical seeming to be a mix of mythological and magical. As for the main character, the reader is shown that she is either a tragic hero or the villain?
Named Tithren in hopes of curving her fierce power and parentage, the main character has always felt different from her fellow Pluran kin sisters. Having a warring voice inside her when facing distressing situations has made her feel broken and confused; That is until one day her true nature begins to surface and she learns her true name, Writhen. Feeling for once empowered, her life begins to rise and spiral all at the same time. Writhen wants to become the next Rend Apex to show all of Matikki that a Pluran is meant to rule, as no one accepts Plurans authority to rule when their race consists only of women. During Writhen's mission to become Rend Apex , she finds out the truth about not only the Plurans origins but the origins of the covenant Plurans made with the dreaded Ophidians. Writhen lets her dark nature take over and deeds are done that cannot be undone, leaving Writhen with power that could be her downfall.
Overall, good fantasy book, but it left me wanting more and a tad confused at parts. If you are open to reading a book about more tragedy than happiness, you'll be good. Honestly, this felt like "The Hobbit" to me, a big intro book leading into something more. Now, the story itself was good showing readers the world more characters will be from and that world's history, but some parts just felt too fast paced. Though I really loved all the action, especially towards the end when Writhen basically takes on a ton of Ophidians, I wish the scenes were slowed down a bit so we could digest them instead of going "What the heck just happened?!" So if you are into fantasy set in strange worlds where the protagonist has a life full of regrets and trials on her path to her goal only to achieve it at the cost of everything she once held dear, than this book may be a good read for you.

SYNOPSIS
I work hard. I study hard. I play hard.

I’ve always wanted to pitch in the major leagues, and I’ve spent my entire life pursuing it with singular focus. I’m one season away from graduation, from leaving to play college ball, and one step closer to living my dream. But then one kiss – a single kiss – changes everything. It’s a kiss I don’t want. A kiss I don’t expect. From a girl I barely know.

Taylor Kinney is edgy. Tough. But I see her in a moment of weakness, feel her desperation and need when her lips touch mine. It’s the kind of kiss that turns the world on its axis, the kind of kiss that overshadows every kiss prior to it. And it’s the kind of kiss that has the potential to throw all my plans out the window. Because all I want to do is protect her, keep her safe. Even if it means putting myself in danger. Even though she repeatedly pushes me away.

I play hard in school, I play hard in baseball, and I play hard in life. And I plan to play hard for her. No matter the cost.

Synopsis:
Magic and Mayhem in Manhattan

Francesca Bellafiore comes from a nice Jewish family — one that happens to have magical powers. Underneath her good-girl exterior, though, she’s a wannabe badass with dreams of becoming a paranormal detective.

Party boy Rafael Muñoz does everything possible to publicly disappoint his high profile father. Privately, it’s a different story. His carefully crafted bad boy reputation masks the fact he’s a master illusionist, forced into solo covert ops. The role is wearing thin and Rafael longs to be part of a team.
When Francesca and Rafael meet, it’s love at first sight… For about five minutes. Rafael is spectacularly attractive—and, Francesca discovers, fully aware of the fact. Rafael knows from experience that girls like Francesca are more trouble than they’re worth.

So it sucks big time when they’re caught in a web of magic, minions, secrets, and enough sexual tension to power NYC. Their only chance to save the city and survive is to team up, trust each other–and maybe even fall in love. . .

Provided they don’t kill each other first.

My Thoughts: For Real Hotie vs. Real Smartie, Let the Games Begin!
Oh this book is definitely explosive, great action moments but even better moments between the two leads. When an Italian meets a Latino things are always hot, but add magic to the mix and it's volcanic. The chemistry in this book is steamy, so much so I'd suggest not reading this book amongst family. (Trust me it'll be awkward.)
Set in a world where you are either a Sapien, regular human, or a Cadabras, person born with magic. Francesca Bellafiore is a Bio, born from a long line of notable Healers. However, Francesca has one desire, which is to become a Cad detective, aka a Boiler. Not wanting to disappoint her family she finally decides to go along with the life planned for her. Until a certain boy with a reputation enters her life and winds up with her in a looped time zone fighting for their lives. Rafael Munoz is the reckless son to the head of MAGE, the organization in charge of protecting Cads worldwide. The only thing is Rafa isn't who he is portrayed to be, not really powerless but gifted in a unique skill, Rafa has been sent on solo missions for years. Awaiting the day he’d break free from his father, Rafa instead finds himself magically stuck with the one girl who makes him boil and yearn. Rafa knows that only as a team can they return to their families alive, problem is their attraction may just be the end of them first, before they can begin to get home.
Overall, chemistry alone I'd rate a 5, but based on character development the story is a 4. When Rafa finally caves to his desire and shows Francesca his shall we say "feelings", by using the ABCs. One word = HOT! Now I liked the book but felt as if there were one too many characters in the story for it develop properly. Basically, Francesca had too many BFFs, I would have loved more focus on one of them over having 3 just for the sake of more diversity. The author really put an effort to include multiple ethnicities, races, sexes and sexualities in her various characters, which was great; But it was just a bit too much for the first book. Hopefully, the second book will be easier to adjust to since everything has been introduced. Plus with that ending I'm hoping there’s more of Rafa and Francesca. So if you’re into hot Latino men who are sexy and know it, that love to rile up the woman they secretly love but can't admit it even if that woman is a Jewish Italian whom you don't ever wanna mess with night or day, than this is a good book to try.
