My Thoughts:  Classic Pirate and Damsel Romance With A Few New Twists.

So I will admit I grabbed this book solely due to the cover. It screamed classic pirate romance novel and I wanted to read a contemporary story to see how it fairs in comparison to my Grandma's romance novels from the 80's, you know the kind with the shirtless rogues on the covers. What I got was exactly that, there was a few twists thrown in to try and make the story more a novel than just a simple romance book, but it was still a struggle to get through this book. Pirate romances apparently aren't my genre.
Captain Zane Fox is the privateer pirate of the sea. He absconds with a tavern wench Miss Lianne Whitney who by chance has in her possession the special Serpent medallion. Zane was hired to retrieve the magical medallion but when he is faced with stealing it or grabbing Lianne and the medallion, he does the later and begins a strange adventure. Lianne is not a simple tavern wench who faints when scared. Instead Lianne is a tough woman from her years of life circumstances that have made her the perfect match for a pirate captain like Zane. Now perhaps the two could find happiness at long last if only enemies like Commodore Bennigton and ex-mates like Sadie Greene would leave them be then maybe a HEA would be on the horizon.
Overall, after giving the story time I found it okay, definitely not impressed or overly excited about the story. In fact I almost stopped reading after the first couple chapters. The story fluctuates between the perspectives of the main characters and its not shown you're switching character perspectives, so that was a bit off putting. The story itself was just cheesy at too many parts, such as a couple girl fight scenes, one of which literally included a pillow fight. I mean really?! It made me wonder in those scenes if the book was written as a RomCom or for men, because it was just sad, in a pathetic kind of way. Lianne was supposed to be the heroine but she was always talking about how her resolve was broken because of how hot he was or looked. And the "love" scenes were also awkward to read because the words exchange were just, I hate using the same word, but they were cheesy. So no I wouldn't read this book again and will not be grabbing another book that screams classic pirate romance novel. I've leaned I'm not into pirate romances. But hey if you want a pirate romance where a girl wants the man but doesn't yet does and they get it on during a roaring storm, then this book could be right for you, but it wasn't for me.

My Thoughts:  Great N.A. Book Right Here!

Loved this book from beginning to end. The characters were fun, loving and had there issues too, which made for a great story. The book is definitely N.A. due to language and a scene or two, but it's worth a read when the main girl is full of insecurities and the man for her is about as perfect as can be if she'd just just accept he's her Mr. Right.
Protagonist of the story is Clementine Avery, Clem for short, is know as the Ice Queen, who doesn't date anyone and runs the campus bookstore like a dictator. Clem has built a wall around her life and heart. She had been hurt, emotionally and physically, one too many times by those closest to her, so Clem has settled into just getting by and trying to write her next best seller. Sadly Clem finds she has a bad case of writers block and can't come up with anything new. In enters Gavin Murphy, the hottest RA but also the sweetest gentleman Clem has ever encountered. Clem is used to being hit on by jerks and has no problem being bitchy to men, but Gavin turns her to mush and pulls down her defenses. All of which scares the crap out of her, because Clem has many reasons why her guard is up. One of which entangles Gavin and Clem in a mystery on campus about a missing student, which could be a breaking point for them or strengthens their relationship. You'll just have to read it to find out.
Overall, absolutely loved the book. Clem is an amazing character because she represents a realistic modern girl. Too many times the main female actions don't align with their past making a reader question their realism despite it being a fictional novel. However, this book portrayed a young woman with realistic issues, who has to work through her problems and admit she has them. Clem isn't honest with people outside her room mates, but opening up to Gavin shows just how vulnerable she is willing to be and allows readers to get to know her and see how broken she is by her past experiences with men and her family. So if you want to read a great N.A. with a great cast of characters, a main character working through her issues and a wonderful book boyfriend named Gavin, then this book is totally worth your time.

EXCERPT from #SELFIE
I didn’t think. I just reacted.
I leapt over the railing with ease. The distance down and the uneven sand I would be landing on didn’t even cross my mind.
It didn’t matter.
I landed like a cat, no trouble at all, and the second my feet hit the sand, I moved forward. Ivy was almost beneath the deck, but not quite. Her back was to me and she was sitting up, hunched forward over part of herself.
She was muttering some pretty damn colorful curse words beneath her breath, and my face split into a smile. “Another angry crab attack you?”
She stiffened and looked over her shoulder. Long blond hair cascaded down her back and partially over her shoulder, creating a waterfall around her.
God, she was beautiful.
Wait. No. No, she wasn’t.
I cleared my throat.
“Braeden?” She glanced up, surprised. “Did you jump down here?”
“Well, you screamed like you might be dying,” I quipped.
“Hardly.” She tried to roll her eyes, but it turned into a grimace. “I need a Band-Aid,” she said pathetically.
I bit back a smile and crouched down beside her. “Let me see.”
She leaned back a little so her body wasn’t blocking my view. The movement brought her closer against me, and the scent of cinnamon wrapped around me. My stomach muscles tightened and I jerked slightly. There was no way she could have noticed, but her head tilted back and her eyes found mine.
We stared at each other for the span of a few heartbeats, neither of us moving or saying a word until someone called down from above, wanting to know if we were okay.
I blinked, bringing myself back from the edge—the edge I always seemed perched on around her—and motioned for her to show me what was wrong.
She lifted her foot into her lap, and I looked down.
I heard myself mutter something, but I was back to not thinking again.
She had the cap of a beer bottle sticking out of the bottom of her foot. Blood oozed out around it and dripped into the sand.
I cradled her foot in my hand and gently stroked my thumb along her heel. A shudder moved through her, and I glanced up.
“Hurts, huh?” I murmured.
She blinked. “Uh…” She blinked again. “Yeah.”
Using one hand, I reached around to the base of my neck and pulled my T-shirt up over my head. I didn’t say anything when I reached for her again, and without any warning, I yanked the cap free.
Her breath hissed between her teeth and she smacked my arm.
“Hey!” I snapped.
“That hurt!” she yelled, but it came out more like a whimper.
I tossed the cap over my shoulder and glanced back down. Fresh blood welled. “It’s over now,” I said gently and used my shirt to wrap around her foot.
Once the shirt was in place, I pressed her foot between my hands, applying a little pressure.
Really, I just wasn’t ready to let go.
“Braeden?” Her voice caressed me. Being down here mostly concealed by the deck in the cool sand and low lighting brought back last night. It reminded me of the undeniable electricity between us.
I thought for sure it would be gone.
It was still there.

My Thoughts: Holy Fritters and Meatballs! This book was a Feast of Laughs!

This book is a hilarious Mystery RomCom that keeps you laughing and reading page after page. Now when you combine a whole lot of misunderstandings and a detective who swears in foods instead of expletives. A reader can be assured of one thing, you will laugh your asparagus off.

Imogene "Mo" Tuttle, works for Incredible Love, which is not an escort agency. Mo had higher dreams in life of being a chef, but life changed and she became a sleuth, who was instructed to stop cussing. Her solution, use her culinary background as her form of obscenities substitute. Mo's snarky and food mouthing attitude makes one man irritated yet very intrigued. His name is Stephen Dagger, aka Ross Grant, in real life, but he is only recognized by his once big role as the action hero from the past blockbuster hit. Ross wants to rid himself of Mo but she and him find themselves mixed up in a dangerous plot. Ross and Mo run from Russian mobsters, slimy reporters, ex-fiances, fans, clients and Hoochie Mama's House!
Overall, This is just one of those RomCom stories that you read and can't help but laugh the whole way through. Mo has to be one of my favorite heroines, because she's snarky and tough but totally a girl too. She's just too funny with her comebacks and sparring moments with Ross, "Thank you,' she said with a bright smile. 'That wasn't a compliment.' 'That's okay because I didn't mean it as a real thank you,' she responded. 'Sometimes thank you means something else entirely . . .but I'm too much of a lady to drop the f-bomb.' 'You're impossible,' he said. 'Thank you.'" Now if you didn't think that was funny, or you haven't said a thank you in place of an f*** you before, then perhaps this book will fly right over your head. However, if you are open to a good many laughs and are okay with two sex scenes, then give this book a try, the crazy characters will certainly brighten up your day, night or rainy day.

"Wednesday's, Wonderings & Wanderings": May Just Maybe My Favorite Month

Did you know that May is named after the Greek goddess Maia or the Roman goddess Bona Dea, who was the goddess of fertility. Ironically (and you'll see why later) there is another version where May is named after the maiores, which is Latin for "elders". The birthstone is the beautiful emerald, which is said to be a symbol of love and success. Oh and apparently there is a flower for the month too which is the Lily of the Valley.

Now I should come right out and state that my awesome date of existence aka my birthday is NOT in May. Nope, this month actually costs me a lot of cash, because not only does this month hold both my parents birthdays, it hold my cousins and friends birthdays as well annnnd Mother's day too. Does any one else hear my bank account weeping, cause I do. Also, lets not forget the other special occasions throughout the month.

Such as:
National ALS Awareness Month (United States)
Asian Pacific American Heritage Month
Better Hearing and Speech Month
National Bike Month (United States)
National Brain Tumor Awareness Month. (United States)
National Burger Month (United States)
Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.
National Electrical Safety Month (United States)
National Golf Month (United States)
Jewish American Heritage Month
International Mediterranean Diet Month
Mental Health Awareness Month (United States)
National Military Appreciation Month (United States)
National Mobility Awareness Month (United States, Canada)
National Moving Month (United States)
New Zealand Music Month (New Zealand)
Older Americans Month (United States)
National Osteoporosis Month (United States)
National Pet Month (United Kingdom)
National Stroke Awareness Month (United States)
Skin Cancer Awareness Month
National Smile Month (United Kingdom)
National Water Safety Month (United States)
etc...
Name it, May claims it. One things for sure May, definitely has a lot of character.

Truly the month is fun, I mean you know the month starts with May the 4th, which if you're a geek you know it's all about  . . .
Then the very next day if you're Mexican America, like myself, or a SoCal resident for that matter, it's the holy day of . . .
Now normally in my house we eat rice and beans at least 3 times a week, it's just what we do as 3rd generation Mexican Americans.  However on May 5th, SoCal residents join in on the Mexican spirit and celebrate Cinco de Mayo by eating rice and beans with burritos, tacos, Carne Asada, etc.

Then there is the day all people either love, loathe or have feelings of heartache over and that day is . . .
Depending on your relationship with your mother, or as a mother yourself, you can either have it filled with a day of loving moments, or anxiety because you and your mom don't have a good relationship, hence the possible loathing emotion. Then there is the possibility of having the feeling of heartache on Mother's day, because not everyone has a mother to celebrate anymore. I know my mom has her mom, my grandma, but it was her grandma, my great grandma, who was her real mom. My Great Grandma's passing still brings tears to our eyes anytime we think of her sweet face, antics and laugh. And I will not forget to mention those that can not give birth, for any number of reasons, who thusly find mother's day a stark reminder that they can not be mothers naturally, but with adoption or giving their love to a child close to them, they can be a mother in any number of ways by nurturing those without a mother or mother figure. Last but not least, there is those mothers who have had miscarriages, they were mothers for a time, wether it was for a week, month or longer, they still carried life and prepared for motherhood. So mother's day for them too is sometimes bittersweet. My mother had one between my sister and me, I named the baby Rachel and insist she is just waiting for us in heaven with my amazing great grandma.

Okay now that I got myself all teary eyed, I can say the rest of the month for me is focused on P-A-R-T-A-Y-S!!

In total I have 5 friends and 5 family members who were all born in this blessed month. I love giving gifts and getting together, so having all these birthdays ensure my group will get together. My family actually combines the birthdays together because they are so close. My aunt's is on the 16th and my 2 are cousin's bdays are on May 18th & 20th, while my parents are on May 20th & 22nd, they are exactly four years and two days apart. For those two days my mom loves to rub it in my dad's face that he's 5yrs older. Also both my cousins are 10 yrs older than me, so now y'all can see why I'd think the later naming of the Latin version maiores, aka elders, for May seems totally correct to me.

Anyways, we hold a one day May birthday celebration for them all. It includes a huge dinner and lunch with this delicious big special cake we all enjoy on their behalf, with them of course. We call that slice of goodness our family cake. because it's the only cake we eat together for any birthdays, which is vanilla cake with white frosting cover with strawberries on top and inside and slide almonds on the outside. Yummy! Ugh, I'm getting a craving for that cake just staring at that pic, and here's the thing. I don't even like pastries or cake unless it's that one cake or a red velvet cupcake, but I'm really snooty and only love Sprinkles Cupcakes. (But that's a whole other post to talk about)

Now, the only reason I could come up with as to why I'm only now just figuring out why May is one of my fav months is one word = FINALS!
I had been in college the last 4 years and finals were always in the last week of May making all the joys of May bothersome and exhausting. I couldn't enjoy anyone's party or gathering while I fretted about the tests I had to study for or the paper I had to write. College sucked the fun out of May but since graduation I can now sit back, breath, and get ready for the next family get together, while I watch my sister stress since she's now in college, the poor dear. Oh well life is life and I'm excited for the next few weeks to hang out with friends and family to celebrate them and how much they mean to me. So if you're born in May chances are you're probably great!
May your May be
Marvelous,
Magnificent,
Mystifying,
And
Yours!

My Thoughts:  Highly Narrative Crime Novel

The story was vey complex mixed with an array of characters and their situations. The story was narrated in both a first person sleuth noir sort of way and then third person perspective to enhance the story and characters.
The protagonist is Jon Scott who is a thirty something man who works as an advisor to the manager at the Monticello's Project. However, what he is real objective on the site is to weed out the scams that pop up during big construction projects, as greed happens when money is around. What shakes up this job for Jon is when a sub contractor is caught up in distributing cocaine, the murder of a state trooper and all that connects to the project in some way making it Jon's concern. The FBI and DEA end pulling Jon into their case as an investigative asset to help solve the crimes surrounding the Monticello's Project.
Overall, the book was okay, it wasn't spectacular but okay and it was a lot to read. I could definitely tell the author knew his stuff and was all about letting his readers be well informed. The story was very "he said, she said" kind of a story. And the tone stayed very steady not too dramatic till the end. The plot flowed relatively well, though it switched from present to past and between 1st and 3rd perspective all in an effort to flush out the story for readers to get the whole picture. Also there was a bit of romance between Jon and a woman named Kathy Sullivan, but it felt really forced at the beginning, actually it felt very awkward. The reason was the character's voices all sounded the same as Jon's, so when Kathy and Jon flirted, it was very flat, not romantic. However, this is a crime novel, not a romance novel, so no one can fault the author for his lack of character chemistry, but I will say chapter 9 was awkward. In the end if you're looking for a story about a guy ferreting out crimes on a construction site who gets caught up in a situation more than his pay grade, this book would be good to try out.
